Assam

The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has recently launched a fleet of 200 electric buses, servicing the same routes as their diesel counterparts throughout Guwahati City. These eco-friendly vehicles, with fares starting from INR 10 for the first three kilometers, are making a significant impact on urban transport.

To gauge the public’s reception, a representative from the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC) travelled from Khanapara to Paltan Bazar, interviewing passengers and drivers. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Passengers appreciated the electric buses for their air-conditioned interiors, enhanced comfort, silent operation, and perceived safety. The comparable fares to diesel/CNG buses, coupled with the convenience of online fare payment through a scanning method, make the switch an attractive option for daily commuters.

Drivers also expressed satisfaction, citing reduced maintenance issues and a more pleasant driving experience. Beyond the direct users, private car owners and pedestrians have also welcomed the state’s initiative, noting the significant reduction in air pollution and noise in congested areas.

Currently, 200 electric buses are running in the state capital, but the government plans to fully transition to electric by 2026. This transition marks a significant step towards sustainable urban transport in Assam, with widespread approval from the public and transport workers.
